Silver Shadow Hits a High Note Down Under

Last Friday Silver Shadow concluded her first-ever 30-day circumnavigation voyage of Australia, docking at Sydney's Circular Quay.

To mark the special occasion, new guests who embarked on Friday began their voyage with the opportunity to enjoy an exclusive short performance by the highly acclaimed star of Opera Australia, Amelia Farrugia, in the ship’s theatre. The performance featured two Puccini arias, including the famous Musetta's Waltz from La Bohéme.

One of Australia's finest sopranos, Ms Farrugia has performed many leading roles for Opera Australia. She is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has won numerous major singing competitions including McDonald's Operatic Aria (1994), The Herald Sun Aria (1994) and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in Australia and New York (1994-1995). She was awarded NSW Young Achiever of the Year (1996) and Green Room Award (2009).

Ms Farrugia was accompanied on piano by fellow Sydney Conservatorium graduate Kate Golla; the award-winning pianist, who has performed regularly as a member of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, is currently on the music staff of Opera Australia.

Following Ms Farrugia's performance, Silversea's senior vice president for Asia Pacific, Steve Odell, co-hosted an exclusive dinner in Silver Shadow’s intimate Le Champagne restaurant, together with David Clarke AO, chairman of the Opera Australia Capital Fund, for a select gathering of the fund's important private patrons.

Silversea has supported the fundraising efforts of the Opera Australia Capital Fund since 2001. The fund is a tribute to Opera Australia’s many supporters, whose collective generosity has built a legacy that will be appreciated by opera artists and audiences in the years ahead.

That same evening, across the harbour, guests from Silver Shadow enjoyed a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the iconic Sydney Opera House, before the ship departed for Singapore at 11.00 pm.

On 1 March, Sydney will welcome Silver Shadow’s sister ship, the spectacular new 540-guest Silver Spirit, for a two day visit. A number of events will take place to introduce the new flagship to the Australian media and Silversea’s travel partners.

The Art of Hospitality

In ancient times, hospitality was considered a sacred duty. At Silversea, it's a way of life. Perhaps no one at our company has mastered the art of hospitality better than Christian Sauleau, our Executive Vice President of Fleet Operations, and today's guest blogger.

Christian Sauleau

As one who was born and raised in France, I have a special appreciation for the warmth and authenticity of European hospitality. Rooted in a culture of passion, generosity and conviviality, ours is a special tradition of hospitality inspired by a joie de vivre, and it often arises from the simple pleasure of satisfying the needs of others.

There are those who say the art of hospitality has been lost over the years, but not for us at Silversea. In fact, I would say it is deeply embedded in our culture.

All of us here work as a team to make Silversea a home upon the seas for our guests. That means each of us is dedicated to helping each other anticipate and serve the needs of our guests. We do this by extending a warm and sincere welcome; as soon as you come aboard one of our ships, a chilled glass of champagne is presented to honour your arrival. That's when our home becomes your home. Then we personally escort you to your suite and help you get acquainted and settled in.

As our guest, you'll have a butler and suite attendant always available to make your suite experience as satisfying and comfortable as possible. To ensure you have the right pillow for a restful sleep, we offer a menu with several options, from soft down to memory foam. We offer choices for your bath amenities so you can select the type of soap, shampoo or lotion that best meets your personal needs. You can even control how your suite is scented with a selection of reed diffuser room fresheners. And our turndown service features some of the world's finest chocolates.

But I think hospitality is best expressed through the enthusiasm and passion our people bring to their work. Proper training, recognition and development opportunities are essential for success in a service career, but we particularly strive to hire only those ladies and gentlemen who are sincerely motivated by their inherent desire to give, serve and help others. When they join Silversea, they step into an uncompromising culture of excellence, where teamwork, communication, innovation, and a commitment to quality result in outstanding service.

With the following short video, it's my pleasure to introduce you to some of the members of our exceptional team. They, and their colleagues, are true artisans of gracious hospitality.
