The Art of Long Cruises: Introducing Silversea's 2015 Grand Voyages

long cruises, grand voyages, silversea ship at sea

Sure, you could hop aboard a commercial flight in Los Angeles and land in London in just over ten hours, if getting from Point A to Point B is all that matters. But if you are passionate about travel and have the time, why not take a long cruise on the high seas and arrive in your final destination feeling refreshed … and possibly transformed by the whole amazing experience?

With Silversea's Grand Voyages, guests on a long cruise spend exciting days ashore exploring magnificent destinations at a leisurely pace, always returning to the easy-going luxury and special camaraderie of a small ship. These long cruises are perfectly suited to those avid travellers who have the time and desire to indulge their wanderlust on a grand scale.

For 2015, we have carefully crafted two long cruises that will allow you to visit must-see cities, travel to far-flung destinations and admire natural world wonders all on a single sailing.

Silver Shadow will depart 7 January on a 62-day "Circle South America" roundtrip voyage from Fort Lauderdale with calls in Key West, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Falkland Islands, Uruguay, Brazil, French Guiana, Barbados, Grenada, Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos, and the Bahamas. Highlighting the itinerary's 36 intriguing destinations is a crossing of the Panama Canal, two days cruising Chile's majestic fjords, a two-night stopover in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, overnight stays in Callao and Punta Arenas, plus many late-night port departures.

Southern Cross

On 22 January, Silver Spirit will set sail on a 64-day "Southern Cross" roundtrip voyage from Los Angeles to explore a collection of 32 exotic and marquee destinations mostly in the South Pacific, including the Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia, Cook Islands, New Zealand, Australia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji Islands, Samoa, Kiribati, and Hawaii. Highlights include sailing New Zealand's scenic Dusky and Milford sounds, overnight stays in Papeete, Melbourne, and Sydney, plus several late-night port departures.

A Host of Added-Value Amenities
And for the first time, Silversea is extending special perks to guests sailing full Grand Voyage itineraries. These include a gala Bon Voyage dinner and pre-cruise overnight stay at a luxury hotel, a $2,000 onboard spending credit (per suite), and commemorative gifts. Plus, for guests on the full "Circle South America" voyage, there will be a complimentary Silversea Experience in Devil's Island and an exclusive event at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Similarly, full-cruise guests will be treated to a complimentary Silversea Experience in Fanning Island (Kiribati) and an exclusive event at the Sydney Opera House on the "Southern Cross" voyage.

Whether sailing completely around South America or cruising the warm waters of the South Pacific, Silversea guests on these unique long cruises will experience fascinating places and cultural encounters from the comfort and luxury of elite, all-suite vessels specifically designed for fewer guests -- just 382 on Silver Shadow and 540 on Silver Spirit. An outdoor court at Melbourne Park.

Now that all the exciting action at Wimbledon has concluded, many tennis enthusiasts are looking ahead to the US Open next month to see if champions Andy Murray and Marion Bartoli can extend their winning performances to the next major event.

But if you're truly passionate about Grand Slam tennis, you might even be looking further ahead to the 2014 Australian Open in January. And although tickets for that event are not expected to go on sale to the general public until October, Silversea guests can reserve a seat now.

Silver Shadow

If you're sailing aboard Silver Shadow's 19 January voyage, you have the option to book our exclusive "2014 Australian Open" 3-night pre-cruise land package -- and witness some of the biggest names in tennis going head-to-head as they battle for the top prize.

On 17 and 18 January, the middle weekend of the competition, Silver Shadow guests will have the opportunity to experience the tournament's thrilling action at Melbourne Park, enjoying reserved seating in the Rod Laver Arena, access to all outdoor courts, meals at select dining venues, an official Australian Open tournament programme, access to exclusive bars, facilities and services, plus access to the Melbourne Park precinct for night sessions.

The programme includes three nights at the luxurious Sofitel Melbourne hotel on Collins Street, a short walk from major shopping, entertainment and business areas. Some meals at the hotel are included. Transfers between the airport, hotel, Australian Open and Silver Shadow are also included.

Silversea Innovation: Watch Streaming Movies on Your Smartphone

Silversea is pleased to launch the first-ever streaming movie service for our guests' mobile devices on Silver Cloud. Not only can you watch movies, but the service includes live streams of news broadcasts on CNN, BBC, ESPN and Fox News.

It's a cruise industry first. And it's complimentary!

The streaming movie service can be accessed on any Wi-Fi-enabled laptop, smartphone, tablet, or even e-book reader -- anything with a browser. It includes access to an extensive library of classic and recent Academy Award-winning feature films, with more than 80 per cent of the movies offered in five languages: English, German, French, Italian, and Spanish.

Smartphones and tablets are a necessity for today's travellers, who rely on instant access to information. Silversea worked closely with RedCell Technologies, HMS, and On-Board Movies to develop a streaming media service that would fit seamlessly with guests' increasingly technology-driven lifestyle.

If somehow you manage to forget to bring your smartphone or tablet, a limited supply of iPad minis is also available (on a first-come, first-served basis) to Silver Cloud guests wishing to borrow a tablet to view the streaming movies and television during the voyage.

By the end of 2013, the streaming movie service will be rolled out to four additional Silversea ships: Silver Shadow, Silver Whisper, Silver Wind and Silver Galapagos.

In the coming months, Silversea is also planning to add an expansive selection of international newspapers to its menu of streamed media offerings, an option currently in the testing phase. Once implemented, guests will have access on their smartphones and tablets to nearly 2,000 periodicals in more than 50 languages from more than 150 countries.

Now while you're voyaging to distant lands, you can relax on your veranda with a glass of champagne and a good movie.
