Savvy travellers know there is much more to savour in Provence than just bouillabaisse. Not only is the southern French region home to world-class cuisine, fields of lavender and iconic vineyards, but a short distance from the port city of Marseille (about a 1.5-hour drive) lies the town of Avignon, a veritable treasure trove for history buffs and the inquisitive traveller.
One of Europe's most beautiful and well-preserved medieval cities, Avignon has the distinction of having served as the official residence of seven popes from 1309 to 1377.
